Less freedom in stage selection, and the stages (1-8 in main game at least) get harder depending on when you do them. There's DLC characters I haven't bought, but I wasn't impressed by what I was seeing of them.

I mostly picked it up because it has couch co-op, in case I ever have a friend on Steam that doesn't buy it on Steam, I can stream co-op with them.
