The Polish leaders told us that, in their opinion, we should not intervene in the affairs of Hungary, since if we did, this would create incredible difficulties for them in Poland. We asked them:

“Well, what is it going to be? What are we going to do, look on quietly while bandits run loose in Hungary hanging Communists? How are they going to smother the Hungarian People's Republic?”

“If Soviet troops intervene”, the Poles said, “then the workers will not understand us.”

“When the workers understand everything, when they look at everything, it will then be too late,” we declared.
