Where Clinton went wrong wasn't saying that wives suffered, but that they were the primary victims. She included daughters and excluded sons. She didn't even say women suffered more - which you could at least make a case for like a headshot is less suffering than being raped - but that women are the primary victims when clearly being dead is the highest price anyone can pay.
