Practically everyone were on the "religious Nazi extremist" side during the siege and especially during the trial (when Randy Weaver's advocate didn't even actually defend him as just attacked the state), including mainstream media. The NYT called it the feds' "PR disaster".

The said defender when first meeting his client:

"My name is Gerry Spence" I began. "I'm the lawyer you've been told about. Before we begin to talk I want you to understand that I do not share any of your political or religious beliefs. Many of my dearest friends are Jews. My daughter is married to a Jew. My sister is married to a black man. She has adopted a black child. I deplore what the Nazis stand for. If I defend you I will not defend your political beliefs or your religious beliefs, but your right as an American citizen to a fair trial." His quiet answer was, "That is all I ask."

And then he demolished the prosecution by just attacking their lies, and rested his case. And so Weaver got convicted of only his failure to appear in court in the original shotgun case, and then he and the family settled their own lawsuit "against the United States and its employees" for a couple million.
