The air campaign in the North was a farce since beginning. They made a list of targets and decided to attack the most important ones last and the least important first, and made no-fire zones (the film Flight of the Intruder is based on this) just like they made free-fire zones in the South (and in Cambodia and Laos). They were also sending Phantoms to attack bridges with their 20 mm cannons and so on, they lost many aircraft on absolutely absurd missions. (They were also really bad at hitting the bridges, until the laser guided bombs came around eventually.)

Tet if you look into it included a lot of American local defeats. Many of them got overlooked, for example ironically the iconic and "misreported" embassy assualt might have killed like 2 Americans at the gate and that's about it (while the entire VC commando squad was then killed in the garden except one who was captured) but a responding column of the MPs in jeeps and trucks was ambushed on the way and just wasted. There's an aftermath video of it by the Marine cameraman (and you can now find it in YT in a perfect HD, along with lots of rare Vietnam videos, due to scanners combing public domain military archives) but at the time it didn't even make into the TV news at all.
