So I haven't had a chance to check out Japanese fan reactions on Twitter yet, but what I've seen so far makes me think this might actually be the creators' intention this time rather than something the "localizers" thought of.
They seem to be going for a rakugo performer thing which is traditionally male, but at the same time, the character has sarashi binding the chest only with an exposed midriff. While it's not unusual for a male character to wear sarashi, it would be rather unusual to have a male character using it that way.
Then again, maybe it's just a tomboy.
