You make a great point. Making great strides after gaining freedom should be something to be proud of. Also you see black people of previous generations having no problems calling themselves Americans. I I certainly don't. I wouldn't have joined the Air Force if I thought this wasn't my country. But you are right, the only issue is that all those that hate America insist on staying in America. Also keep in mind that there are those who have a lot to gain with the hyper-focus on American slavery. In one of his books Sowell talked about how slavery should be taught from a global perspective. I think that would help keep people from obsessing over it.

I did my DNA thing and it showed the West African countries I have ancestry from but considering my African and European ancestors were in America by the late 1700s at the latest I have never considered myself anything but American despite the circumstances of slavery.

Incidentally one of my European ancestors came on the Mayflower. My dad jokes that we have everything covered in regards to how we arrived.

Remember in Black Rednecks and White Liberals where Sowell was saying imagine how different attitudes would be if slavery were taught from a global perspective so those who use it as a crutch wouldn't be able to since pretty much every group has suffered from slavery?
