The article briefly touches on it, but there's a reason why (North) Ireland isn't the land of fruits and veggies (sans the potato). (North) Ireland's soil is pretty bad for crops and definitely would not support a full switch from raising animals to raising crops.
Ultimately this would make meat, and other foods, much more expensive in GB chiefly, since that's usually where NI's final product usually ends up. All for an imagined issue.
ADDITION: And also the economic devastation wrought by ignorantly banning the livelihoods of many and offering them nothing to replace it with. (Better learn how to code boyos!)
