I went with protonmail because they're run by scientists with an actual business model to get people to pay for it so should be around for a while.
I don't expect it to be any less monitored by the feds, but at least it isn't going directly into the Google.
edit: found out that protonmail 'bridge' and export requires a paid account, but apparently you can downgrade to free again. So basically they're charging you $4 to download and back up your email.
So tutanota.com is better for free accounts since you can download messages, but you have to log in once per 6 mo or they delete your free account.
