They were relucant to give up their rifles for many reasons: masculinity symbols (status symbol for young men especially), they needed them for hunting as they were still just nomadic hunters, most simply their property (and most valuable at that), and instead of even any compensation they just got big guns pointed at them, making them afraid to be disarmed. Waco had many similarities, including a wacky apocalyptic cult with (legal) guns, a raid by bumbling idiot feds, a bloodbath after a random gunshot, lots of dead kids, and instigation of all this by sensationist journalism.
