Ah yes, I see your point, but oh no, it’s not (Irish) Gaelic I’m talking about here, my friend. They don’t like Gaelic, so much (this IS Belfast, remember!), although some signs may also be in it…

No, no, this is Plantation Scots. This is a language that only came to Ulster in the 1600s, when the Crown sent over thousands of Protestant Scottish Lowlands (mostly) settlers, to “breed out” the locals…

It has SOME roots in Scottish Gaelic, but it’s really just a dialect of English…

Like, imagine someone with a thick Scottish accent speaking English. Now imagine you decided to write down what they were saying, while mimicking the accent. That’s what Scots, and by extension Plantation Scots, is…

So you therefore have signs written in English, sometimes (real) Gaelic, and then something that looks like they were having a laugh, while mocking people with Scottish accents. I’m deadly serious. Look it up, lol.

There was a scandal a few years ago where it turned out that the Scots Wikipedia was almost entirely written by one young American bloke, with too much time on his hands, using translation software… It blew up everywhere, including on Reddit…

Also worth a Google, if you’re bored! 😅
