It was illegal to do this to a slave but of course this didn't stop them, slave traders would buy a slave, move him out of the country, amputate his genitals off. If he survived (I think it was about a 50% rate) they'd bring him back and sell him for a high price.

This seems to be what's going on. Modern society switching to the female model where you don't force someone yourself, you emotionally gaslight and abuse them until they do it to themselves.
