What do I personally have to gain from making anything up?

You want others to do what you are unwilling to do yourself, because you lack conviction.

You don't want to be a John Brown, you don't want to be a martyr for the cause, you want to be a Joshua Chamberlain. Well, nobody gets to be Joshua Chamberlain until someone is John Brown.

And if you actually believed all that, you wouldn't care which part you're playing.

You have no courage, you don't actually believe in your own self-righteousness. You are not on a holy mission in the service of a higher good, you are simply a small selfish being who knows himself to be small and selfish.

If you genuinely believed what you say you believe, then you would be drenched in the blood of tyrants (and probably a lot of your own as well) right now.
