Either:

He did something "wrong" in the eyes of the cabal.
He was becoming too popular of a figurehead, and risked unbalancing the uncontrolled masses. (They have someone in mind to take that role, can't have one of the peons getting too much support or their will be an ideological clash on their side).
[less likely] He really was becoming a liability for them and they couldn't keep this information under wraps much longer.
