This is something that people severely underestimate, I'm reminded of the success of World of Warcraft believe it or not because the out of touch executive types and CEOs made the exact same mistakes then, does anybody even remember that? Literally every fucking game that came out tried to copy WoW because of how big it was.
Quite famously at least in gamer circles, there was a little known MMORPG called Star Wars Galaxies and they tried chasing the WoW playerbase over catering to their own very loyal playerbase they had gotten themselves. As a result they ruined the original gameplay that they had and I was a part of witnessing and experiencing that clusterfuck as a gamer and it was a major lesson to me when I was about 11 - 12 about how not to treat your customers.
We're very much seeing the same scenario play out except this seems to be completely artificially created. Marketing executives and contractors who have whipped themselves up into a frenzy trying to chase a market share that simply doesn't exist. I do think they seriously believe their own rhetoric about evil white man babies preventing minorities and women from playing video games with their behaviour. You see it in the chat leaks and how they talk to each other through memos among other things.
Except that shit doesn't fly when you can't even get these same people to play any of your shitty singleplayer games that barely qualify as games to begin with and are more like pretentious hipster art galleries no one wants anything to do with. The difference between the situation with WoW and this is back then they didn't have government incentive to behave the way they do so this whole fad has been prolonged way more than it would have otherwise been able to last and across the entire industry.
It was all downhill after Holocrons.
