Now don't get me wrong, yes I know it's Rockstar, yes they are probably still going to make millions because GTA has such an established fanbase and they will buy a literal turd with a rockstar logo on it given the opportunity, this is all true.
However even if the story mode is half-decent and I've got this feeling it's going to be fairly lackluster given the angle that they're going with and it seems despite being a 'crime' game they're shying more and more away from controversy these days and have definitely been infested with the woke.
Here's where it's going to get funny though, GTA Online. Oh boy is that going to be a clusterfuck. The brain drain is very real at game studios and it looks like they're having more and more problems holding onto talent. Any programmer with half a brain isn't going to want anything to do with these arseholes. Found a youtube video that does a perfect job encapsulating all the problems with online which as with most modern games is just a vehicle for micro-transactions so they make sure it's always more convenient to whip out your bank card and sign over your details. It's remarkable how Rockstar Games have managed to make a crime game that's boring.

I have barely even ranted about how bad this game is going to be from a technical networking perspective yet either since we're seeing how GTA V even to this day is constantly falling over due to the number of players. Even if people still buy the game, they're going to get pissed off at the state of it. I have to wonder as well how much of the back end of GTA VI they've really messed with and if it's just another clone of the same code as GTA V.
It probably won't be saints row bad, but I reckon it won't be too far off it to be honest.
The main stories and characters have been getting progressively worse over the years and this one won't be any different. Especially with the writers that seem to plague every media outlet.
It'll be a combination of V and RDR2. It'll look nice but with the standard GTA jank.
Don't forget 5 was a massive downgrade from 4 tech wise. It had so much more in it, the vehicles were all round better. You could pickup things and throw them.
I was poking around San Andreas a bit too and the one thing that really stuck out for me feature wise was how cancerous GTA V's soft body physics simulations were making everything. In comparison to the older games even GTA IV it's nowhere near as responsive as a game should be.
It's wild how downgraded 5 is compared to 4. Everything is numbed down with the only upgrade being the visuals.
This video shows it quite well, it's pretty shocking what they stripped out.
Crowbcat GTAIV is better than GTAV
Yeah in the Sims community they've been noting this to with many of the players going back to the Sims 3 or even Sims 2 because Sims 4 is that boring. The whole thing studios are going for these days is to take old games and strip them down to barebones then sell us back to them piece by piece which is why I get so bitchy about the state of singleplayer games and barely acknowledge the stuff coming out.
The Sims 4 team recently pulled a bitch move as well and I hate it when they introduce time sink mechanics like this. If you start doing too much of one thing the Sims will get this stupid dazed trait and there's also this horrible burnout mechanic which is clearly designed to force your Sims to do other things. I don't think they designed it particularly well either because it frequently pops up for no damn reason nearly and I lost my patience with it.
I have a love hate relationship with TS4; TS3 is so much better but I like some of the improvements that they did in 4.
My biggest peeve is how it just breaks itself over time. It's like the sandbox wasn't designed to run for more than 30 ingame days or something. Oh- this and how the maps are actually tiny compared to 3.
They're reintroducing old mechanics into 5, like the ability to retexture anything. But the game itself looks like it's designed for mobile so I'll just keep an eye on the competitors which are popping up.
Also; for your issue there's a sizeable modding community for it now. There's probably a mod which removes that mechanic
GTA has soft-body physics?
Yes, it's pretty fascinating, that's how they simulate the car destruction believe it or not. Since I'm so into game dev I've been looking a lot into how modern games do various mechanics. The cars for example are actually soft bodies and they've got tons of bits separately modelled that 'peel' off when you crash into stuff. The physics is a big reason why a lot of these open world games are so expensive resources wise.
I'd seen BeamNG used spring-mass systems for their deformation, but given that damage was limited to certain zones in GTA V, I'd assumed they used pre-authored damage morphs & debris meshes like everyone else. Got any links, it would be an interesting read?
As for the expense, requirements dependent, you might be surprised. I played around with soft body in Unreal a bit. A really performant PBD implementation was actually quite quick to get up and running. Non-linear Gauss-Seidel solvers can be heavily parallelized on GPU through clever clustering and graph colouring. Collision remains a bit of a sticking point - I got about half-way towards good results with low resolution proxy hulls, but then Unreal went and changed physics APIs.
