The alleged attackers name (as still in court) is Marcus Arduini Monzo, he's 36 and is a dual Spanish Brazilian national. Seems to be some religious fanatic according to incident reports and killed a black teen so not targeting the native population. There is a court sketching of him available.
But in general, the UK is a mess and has been for a long time because insufficient self defence protections. Not just in terms of tools for protection but the act of protecting yourself can get you the same amount of trouble as protecting yourself in New York.
Yeah the Brazilians do tend to murder people in the streets for organized crime rather than organized religion. But given the guy was in the UK long enough to own a van, it'd make more sense if he had previously lived in Spain, there were just way more easy avenues to enter that way.
The officers gave chase and Monzo lunged at a female constable, who received “horrifically serious injuries," police Commissioner Mark Rowley told LBC Radio.
Rowley acknowledged that the officer nearly lost a hand and said surgeons spent hours “basically putting her arm back together."
The woman officer's partner also suffered serious arm and hand injuries in the confrontation.
Rowley, who leads the Metropolitan Police Service, applauded his officers for running toward danger. He said they arrived 12 minutes after receiving the first call and the suspect was detained 10 minutes later
12 minutes is slow and even then they turned up massively unprepared.

From elsewhere
Why does it feel like that's paraphrased from an original quote that's much more phlegmy?
The only reason I doubted Muslim was Brazilian nationality. As far as I can remember, Islam ain't that popular in South America.
If it was just Spanish nationality, then I'd easily believe Islamic attack.

It's why American police can legally shoot a guy with a knife if they are a certain distance from them.
You can REALLY close the distance on a person with a gun if you have a knife. Just ask anyone that fought the Gurkas or fighting against insurgents.
But was it in a sword-free zone? Was there a sign? If there's a sign saying it's a sword-free zone, then there can't be any sword attacks.
The UK police are a joke, from another article:
12 minutes is slow and even then they turned up massively unprepared.
It really makes you wonder how much damage could have been averted if the cliched "good guy with a gun" had actually been present.
When seconds count the police is 12 minutes away.
Too bad us Euros have been disarmed and we aren't allowed to defend ourselves.
every self-respecting man should become a practical medieval historian nowadays.
But at the same time they can send out their swat team for kids playing with toy guns.
I would still have the UK police than the filth from America.
women should not be policing in the field, if at all.
Any homicidal nutter can grab a tree branch and make a spear. I'm waiting for them to ban trees and rocks.
Obviously we need common sense sword laws smh. This wouldn't have happened if it was a sword free zone.
A gun probably would’ve helped put the dude down faster honestly
