There's no such thing as "not being able to afford a costume", because the whole point of Halloween is to show your creativity with what you have, not to rent. buy or make the most expensive thing evar. There's always the hobo clown and the sheet ghost, when it comes down to it. Or just make something up. "I'm a ninja. Real ninjas look like everyone else, because they're assassins."

Or tell everyone "that's not my dog. That's my kid. Good costume, eh?" ;)
