Johnny Rotten was recently photographed wearing what appears to be an official Make America Great Again shirt and "punks" worldwide have decided that he isn't punk. The comments are full of some chuckle-worthy seethe and a few actually intelligent(!) posters defending Rotten.
Apparentky punk now has a dress code or something.
Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't being offensive and shocking part of punk? If so, then Johnny Rotten has it right and there's a whole lot of "punks" who don't understand punk.
Punk is counter-culture. Not being a raging leftist is about as counter-culture as it gets these days.
That made me laugh really hard. Some blue checkmark commented "he is about as punk as golf" Yes: the fact that every single corporation espouses your exact belief system makes you very "punk."
Yep, which is why punk stopped being punk decades ago. Punk was one of the first subcultures subjugated by feminism. Punk's feminist overlords, as they always do, ejected everyone who offended them from the subculture. Exhibit A: this little specimen from 1981.
Punk is also being anti-establishment. The anti-establishment hates Trump.
MAGA=punk
why else would jonny rotten in his youth wear a nazi t-shirt? Punk is absolutely supposed to be shocking
Honestly isn’t it more punk rock to be conservative now. Being responsible and raising your family is rebellious now. Being a far left nut is the norm.
Being a devote Christian, a Republican or just a casual Trump supporter is the new contra-culture. So, a very Punk posture actually.
Imagine punk fans wanting someone to conform.
I'd rather not, tbh.
That isn't recent, but their reaction is what makes it punk.
I've never understood punk or liked the folks who seem to fill its ranks, but from my understanding rejecting conformity and authority is a huge part of it.
In that way, policing it only seems to send up the idea that you aren't part of it rather than your target.
Your first mistake was going to r/(broadTopic). They are almost all astroturfed by the mods, with dissenting opinions being banned and pushed away.
But I have noticed that the left still thinks that they are the counterculture. If you try to bring it up to them, that left wing ideas have the attention and power right now, they will either dismiss it as not being left, if they happen to be socialist or communist, or the leaders of a list of countries are right wing so the left is just countering that, even if you are talking about a country with a left wing leading party.
Punk doesn’t even have a political leaning, because whoever or whatever the “machine” happens to be is always shifting.
Even whenever punk was just starting as a genre, there were both right and left wing punks. Some of the genre is inherently political, just because the machine is often defined as being the current government structure or mainstream belief system.
They are trying to gatekeep people that were already there, just like they do with everything else
Actually, that's exactly what a punker would do. The whole point of them is to spit in the eye of convention and conformity.
That's got to be the least self aware comment in the Reddit thread. "Why don't you agree with major tech companies, all the cable TV news channels, nearly all career politicians and countless celebrities? You're just a sheep man!"

Conservatism is the new punk
Punk has always been an anti-establishment counter culture... so its stands to reason that they should be opposed to Democrats... but if you understand the way Jonny has always expressed himself, I wouldnt put it past him to wear it just to stir shit up, he WANTED this reaction and you cant call yourself Punk for falling for it.
