Now I pretty much watch the SYFY channel for Futurama reruns or the New Year Twilight Zone marathon (although I’m sure they will deem that problematic soon). I used to love that channel but now they have given in to the usual diversity/sjw nonsense. I stopped looking at their website when the review of Brightburn was a rant against white males and Wheel of Time was sexist because multiple women were in love with the protagonist.
I saw a show being advertised about Leia and the summary mentioned women and “non-binary” fans of Star Wars discussing representation. I honestly think that if everything you watch has to represent you then you have deeper issues. I’m a black guy who will be 40 soon and When I was younger I read lots of golden age sci fi and loved it for the stories. I cared more about entertainment/good stories. A simple reading of history will show you that men and women of all races are capable of greatness so I don’t need to see a black person being a scientist to know that I can be one or attempt to be one.
I love Superman and Spider-Man because they are awesome. Loved John Stewart green lantern because I am a huge green lantern fan.
Why do the usual suspects get so angry when you question if they are really a fan. Like in gaming I’d ask these women who constantly whine why not make a game they like or find one they relate to instead of ruining games for devoted fans. Not just women. Plenty of men in the industries that seem to get hired for diversity points and not talent.
I’ll never understand this. It still cracks me up when I hear the term gatekeeping thrown around. Sounds logical to me that someone who hates the material and wants to change it shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near it.
I remember as a kid I was so excited about Sci Fi channel and remember watching old school sci fi stuff and even liked their stuff like Tin Man. You are right they had a great model when they appealed to sci fi/fantasy fans.
I still need to watch Babylon 5. I decided to not watch anything, read any books or comic books made after 2014 with a few exceptions like Yellowstone and Better Call Saul or if someone I trust recommends it. You are right, it was nice when nerds had companies that wanted their business. There are so many shows and books out there from the pre woke days that I can’t watch or read them all in my lifetime.
I tried to give the Wendig books a chance (been reading Star Wars expanded universe since I was 12) and I didn’t like it. He seemed more interested in diversity check marks. Also I was wondering what happened to the main characters and it barely focused on them. Some of the Disney comic books are good but I’ll stick with the original EU. I prefer that storyline more.
Oh. You're one of those (people who liked New Jedi Order).
You are in for a treat.
Zero spoilers because it's a very tight knit show mostly, but the pay off from the very end sequence is one of the most moving moments you'll probably experience from a TV show.
RIP Firefly... one of my all time favourites that only got 1 season... mind you it was directed by Joss Whedon and probably would have devolved into SJW lectures and shit-flinging...
Joss Whedon is a one-man-argument for studio interference. Whenever there is studio interference (Firefly, first Avengers movie) he can churn out solid stuff. When he gets free reign (later superhero movies, Serenity [firefly movie]) he just shits the bed.
They made a tv show called "the internet ruined my life", where they fear mongered about a troll who falsely stated that he was going to snipe the #cancelcobert bitch just to fuck with her.
I think your confusion stems from taking them at their word. They’re all liars saying and doing whatever gets them power. Once you accept this plain reality, everything makes perfect sense.
Oh, man, I remember the early days of the Sci-Fi Channel. On C-Band, Galaxy 5 Channel 4 I think. For a week it was nothing but a vortexy screensaver, no idea what was going to show up. Then it added a countdown set to end on Friday or Saturday night. And the first thing that came on when the countdown ended? The original Star Wars.
And their weekend lineup! I think it was Sci-Fi Buzz that gave Harlan Ellison five minutes every week in front of a camera to be... well, to be Harlan Ellison. And then it was followed by this weird conspiracy theorist show where the host promoted stuff like the expansion of the Bermuda Triangle and the had odd "advice" like taking truffles out of the bag before weighing them at the till so you don't pay truffle prices for the bag. ( Because I guess you can buy hideously expensive mushrooms at Bob's Bulk Bonanza...? )
The first time I ever saw Doctor Who was on the Sci-Fi channel. Genesis of the Daleks, one afternoon when I wasn't at school for some reason. Speaking of things that have fallen far.
They were so pissed that they couldn't get exclusive rights, but Iowa Public Television had been buying Doctor Who for about 30 years at that point and BBC told Sci-Fi they weren't going to throw existing customers under the bus.
Skip forward to Nu Who where they decided to throw the existing fans under the bus instead along with lots of the lore.
Detroit PBS was big on it since forever, too. Got confused when I saw anyone other than the Fourth Doctor for a while.
Oh yea! I do remember that. Good times. Also the first time is saw Night Gallery.
Because what motivates women is not to have something for them - it's to take something from us.
FTFY. It's not exclusive to gender (though I'll concede women tend more authoritarian leftist than most).

Tangentially on topic I really liked Krypton. The actors were all giving 110% and Nyssa Vex as absurdly smoking hot. Only lasted 2 seasons but it was fun the whole time.
happy future 40th, fren
Im surprised that channel isnt a 24/7 re-run of "A Wrinkle in Time" to be honest.
A little piece of good news for SF fans; I think one of the reasons why people are so positive about the Dune trailer is that there’s very little sign of social justice in it (so far)
I read the book ten years ago and I plan to read it again soon. That’s good to hear about the trailer but I know there was some race/gender swapping which is to be expected now but still makes me a little wary.
It's Kynes, big whoop. Kynes is there to give Leto the tour and then get left in the desert to die.
And my bet, is that having Kynes be a woman they have Stigar be Channi's father.
I looked into this. It seems to be almost all about Liet Kynes. This was a blond man in the Lynch movie, but is now a black woman. I suspect the original book meant him to be a Middle-Eastern tan or black man. But honestly, it's been 20 years since I read it, and I had almost forgotten this character. It's definitely not one of the most memorable characters from the book. I'll re-read the book after the movie I think so I don't get too hung up in details.
How memorable the character is isn't the point. It's one of the God Emperor's maternal parents. Consider what that means for Leto II [the second] and his twin sister.
It's Dune.
There's only so much you can do to it to begin with. I mean, sure, that kind of thinking might be daring them to try to be worse than David Lynch, but... how?
And people still watch the Lynch version. Yeah, it's quite possibly the worst film of the 1980's but it has some moments.
I think the consensus with Dune is that we already got the worst, and then we got the mediocre, so there's nowhere to go but up.
Haha 'worst film of the eighties'...that's a good one.
Well, I've heard that the making of "Dragonriders of Pern" has been stuck in development hell for a while. I can imagine why, even with the gunk about the Green Riders (which makes sense if you put events in the proper context re: the planet's history .. women would have become valuable "commodities" once again after the 6th pass/interlude plague (iirc, that's when the Holds started to be loath to let their girls go to the Weyrs). This would have helped cause a lack of females to satisfy all the Greens, so they were happy to settle for gays instead (as dragons, they probably didn't see much difference, however their perception of human sex, sexuality and orientation worked.) The plague and the subsequent drop in population was probably also why no one wanted to send their girls to the Harpers any more, either (and not many women even want to become Smiths.)
But the thing about the left is, that it doesn't like to think things through in a practical manner, and think that practicality and need should be trumped by ideology ....
That being said, I hate what McCaffrey's son did; from what I've read of his crap, all he did was steal and regurgitate his mom's ideas and graft them onto the "dark" passes, but with more perverted sex just for the sake of writing about pervy sex.
I would say something about how they might not like the basic feudalism, but I think that's what they want to begin with (with Hollywood as their Church - arbiter of cultural attitudes, that is - and their Elon Musk technobusinessman rock stars as the new Nobility), and that it's pretty much Man's natural organizational state to begin with (at least, once he organizes past the family band, anyway.)
I’ll watch the movie eventually for sure. Just in these last few years I’ve really focused on reading source material of things since so many adaptations want to change stuff. But you are right. This movie could very well be good. I saw the 80s movie when I was little. I need to rewatch.
