Maybe it's just because I'm a complete sperg who barely has a handle on my own culture's idiosyncrasies, but I cannot wrap my head around all the preening and posturing to create the illusion of wealth, status, sophistication, honor, etc. Like, I get wanting the perks that come with those things, but maintaining the illusion without the actual qualifications makes it seem like the juice isn't worth the squeeze, especially compared to actually earning/creating legitimate value.
Fraud and superficiality must be encoded in their genetics.
This is why they love AI so much, it provides the surface level appearance of productivity and a mechanical subordinate you can abuse for simulated status.
That's because you grew up in a functional culture, not theirs.
They all know that they're all lying. You and 10 others apply for a job. Let's say you're a 5/10 and the other guys are a 4/10. You claim to be a 5/10, they claim to be a 6/10. The boss either compares 5 to 6 and picks one of your competitors or he assumes you're all scamming, because everyone is a scammer, and assumes your claimed 5/10 is really 3/10 and hires your competitors. Once that's the norm, being the one honest guy would mean having to outperform everyone else's most convincing lie. And why wouldn't you lie? Everyone's already assuming you are. It's not just trying to get perks. Honesty is actively punished.
That's why these societies hit a wall in their development. When the task is complex enough to require more than a handful of people, any competency that is there can't overcome the cheating and jockeying for position.

You’re completely within your right to question their retardation. For societies that are only rich & poor (no middle class) the poor mimic their “betters” as culture flows downward. And yes, pun intended.
