It's a coping mechanism brought about by life long servitude. You're powerless in all aspects of life so your brain just starts to cave in to everything and pretend that you wanted it, it's the only way it can feel in control.

To expand on this, consider an undisciplined child. The parent's say "time to put on your shoes" and there is an argument and tantrum. Eventually the parents win by force or persistence and the child puts on his shoes, but he might be upset about it for quite some time - because in his mind, he could have won, he could have gone to school barefoot. No boundaries or limits to the child's freedom have been established, so in the child's mind, everything is on the negotiating table. Once proper order and limits are established, the child loses some freedom, but is actually happier because they no longer feel the loss of things that are impossible.

This is good, in moderation, but it can go overboard where you learn to offload all freedom and decisions to others and never feel opportunity loss again. This is the siren song of becoming a slave. It sounds weird that people would want to be slaves but once you recognize this you will see it everywhere.

Part of this is due to our current authority spiral where it's much easier to enforce rules against the already compliant, so we beat the civilized men down over and over while ignoring the feral animals among us.
