I have a different conclusion, they're not overconfident, they're getting their dirty laundry out now while they hold power because they feel like if it's out now there's less of the 'we found this new crime so guillotine them' later on.
Much like the authoritarian shit that's in overdrive now, they are on the decline and many of them have realised it so they've gone into overdrive pushing things to 11 hoping to remain in power or slowly drip feeding the shit they've done so that there's a hope people pass them by since they know it all when the day of the axe comes.

My prediction is more that all the safety nets that have kept the left safe will simply collapse and they'll die in huge numbers. The New York incident is one of those examples, they are going to walk around, doing their thing like they always do, not realising NO ONE is protecting them anymore and they'll simply die. By the time they realise the change it'll be too late and so many will have died they'll no longer be a voice in society. The right that have guns won't rush to their aid, they'll focus on protecting their own first and it'll be a bloodbath for years to come.
