I always thought the sinister Ohio meme at least started as a sort of “it’s funny to pick somewhere without famous landmarks or that most people haven’t been to and pretend it doesn’t exist.” I’ve seen the same joke with Finland, Madagascar, Australia, and New Zealand. It may have been picked up by and/or taken on some undertones because of leftists trying to dunk on the midwest, but I mostly see it as the same sort of semi-absurdist humor as the “birds aren’t real” meme.
