As Milton Friedman said “when you incentivize something you get more of it”. There is a lot to gain by whining about racism or oppression that doesn’t exist. I saw this during the summer of love where black people who I knew grew up in middle or upper middle class suburbs, some had swimming pools, and some had gone to private school all of a sudden claimed to be victims of massive racism and how else can you interpret that especially since they had never talked much about race before. It has become very trendy to whine about a perceived oppression. I think part of that is the reason you see the rise in lgbt. White teens see that as a way to get on the oppression train
The LGBT thing is spot on. It's a way to claim oppression status. I bet all of us can point to at least one "bisexual" girl we knew in college who exclusively dated guys.
Though nowadays they'd probably call themselves pansexual or some more in vogue term.
