Bankruptcy doesn't discharge student loans. They can't repossess a degree or supposed knowledge like they can a house or car. So going bankrupt wouldn't even help.
It seems like changing the law to let them go bankrupt, putting the burden on the banks instead of the taxpayers, would be an easy and more constitutional solution. So of course they're not going to do that.
I don't think causing a financial crisis is a good idea. So many of these loans would be defaulted and IIRC, they are marked in balance sheets as safe loans.
Whatever happens cannot apply retroactively. Those who already have loans must pay them.
