They find that the literature feels more current, which is refreshing. And it’s easier to understand than, say, Shakespeare, which has pretty dated language. I’ve had some friends say that Shakespeare is irrelevant.

It's easier to understand? Say no more.

I’m originally from Newfoundland and Labrador, but I grew up in the GTA. I’m a member of the Mi’kmaq and Loon Clan, and I’m in Grade 12 at Kâpapâmahchakwêw—Wandering Spirit School in East York.

His last name comes from Arabic. He's probably Pakistani or something. Note how he completely ignores that part of his background, because it gives him more privilege to claim membership in as many Indian tribes as possible.

Kâpapâmahchakwêw

Yeah, that's easier to say than Hamlet or Romeo

There also aren't any remaining Indigenous peoples native to the true island of Newfoundland (though there are Innu across the strait on the Labrador coast).

The Beothuks essentially disappeared while Newfoundland was still only a fishing colony.

The Mikmaq he is referencing hail from the Maritimes which are a long ferry ride across the Gulf and a completely separate history and culture, for both White and Indigenous factions.

You know the only “unique” thing about this..?

That it’s a dude. Usually these sort of “mixed” Indige-grifters are women, at least in Aus…

Though he certainly isn’t the first half-Muslim (country) “Indigenous” person I have heard of…

snort

Some of the Jews who did not leave for North America to become Indians (according to Mormonism), went to India to become proper Indians. Ergo, Mr. Shafqat can claim descent from a common ancestor.

You always know who the privileged people are by who people pretend to be.

Oh, here in canada that's the only thing native men are known for. The guys are extremely cucky SJW types who will fight to have you jailed if you don't pronounce their names correctly, and the women are extremely cheap and lazy to the point in which 20% of their deaths are caused by hitch-hiking-assisted murders. There's literally a highway in alberta called the "highway of tears", named because at least 50 native women have "disappeared" after trying to hitch-hike there.

And the feds did a huge dog-and-pony show Truth and Reconciliation Commission-style inquiry wasting millions looking into the reason for the disappearances along the highway hoping to blame whitey and the racist RCMP.

Unfortunately, they quietly ignored that

-A) native women don't actually go missing/get murdered at rates higher than other women

-B) the number one killer of native women are native men

I remember that, CBC was practically wailing about it every five minutes for the entirety of the commission and then when the results were published, the silence was deafening.

Shakespeare has done more for literature, drama, and entertainment than all Native Americans combined.

Well, Shakespeare actually wrote down his contributions to start, which essentially laps every tribe on the continent.

Imagine if Shakespeare's plays just relied on an "oral history" to pass them down to present day.

To be fair, oral tradition has its own significant cultural value as well, unless you're willing to discount things like Homer's contributions for example.

Sort of, I guess? Homer was early Hellenic (8th century BC) and created his grand works about legends passed down from the mycaneans who were pre-hellenic, but definitely the immediate ancestors of the hellenes. They had writing too. So we don't actually know what sources Homer was working off of, but the bronze age collapse would have made written sources scarce which is what leads us to insist it was all oral. Linear B and Greek Majuscule have basically nothing in common. But the idea that Homers works would have been written down pretty much immediately is plausible since it would only be a few years (350 years) later that Xenophon wrote down his histories--and that guy was prolific as hell.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but I was pretty convinced that Homer dictated his works because he was blind, but those works would have been collected and collated almost immediately...

Laughs in Australian Our Indigenous make Native Americans look like the peak of civilization, by comparison…

And yet, the left insists on some vague “equivalence” between all “Indigenous” peoples, smh…

I spent some time at an Aboriginal medical clinic as a Canadian.

Biggest differences off the top of my head

  • A) Aussie Abos had supernatural beliefs responding with fear and complete deniao to any suggestion that they could be diabetic. They treated it as a curse, similar to if you had just been told you had cancer or AIDs. Presumably because anyone they knew with diabetes died.

  • B) Aussie Abos had terrible skin and were chronically infected with scabies. We used to hand antibiotics for secondary infections out like candy. Canadian aboriginals can get scabies too, but I'd never seen anything like Oz before.

  • C) Aussie Abos universally wouldn't wait in the waiting room for their appointment, even in the middle of southern hemisphere summer and a building with A/C. They would be smoking in groups on the corner and I'd personally have to go outside and wrangle my next patient on my daysheet constantly.

Shakespeare gets a bad wrap because they make it a forced part of English lessons in a lot of countries and as ALL of us can probably relate to when you are forced through the Education system you learn less than when you are just doing it in your free time.

I'm surprised they'd even learn about indigenous people for more than a talking point as maybe they can mention the time the Canadian mounties went round on government orders genociding huskies by the tens of thousands to stop inuit migration...

It used to be fashionable amongst our intellectual betters to be knowledgeable about Shakespeare. Now it's fashionable amongst amongst our intellectual betters to call Shakespeare racist.

Yeah, they could probably interest students in Shakespear by relating current works to his story archetypes but...nah; just brute force your way through 400 year old plays where the language is barely recognizable, that's how public education works!

I've had friends say has to be the worse way to debate an argument. I don't see how that could convince anyone of your position.....what do you mean the school board is taking his position? In that case I've had friends say sucking my dick cures and prevents cancer

...Isn't it common for kids to HATE their assigned readings?

Is this "Isaiah Sahfqat" really as native Canadian as his name implies? It seems like a plot to make people hate indigenous literature.

Too bad it wasn't this easy to trash teachers and change courses when I was in 12th grade.

I would have had my HS dump Willa Cather and Frank Norris for underground comix.

Shakespeare will be around when these fucked-up little indians are dust and their jumped-up "indigenous literature" more forgotten than it already is, if it exists at all other than something hanging in the outhouse next to the old newspapers.
