Talk about getting high on your own supply. She's the literal first example of the "tiny women tossing around grown men" trope. As a superhero she is responsible for a lot of the things people hate most about female characters in modern fiction.

Oh and speaking of norms. She was an accomplice to Whedon molesting the other women in the cast, because of course a man who looks like that is a prolific pervert.

In case anyone who was unbanned from twitter wanted to toss that in her face.

The entire Buffy franchise is built on one single trope, and that is that Whedon imagined the stereotypical horror movie archetype screaming blond high school girl running away from the monster turning around and beating the shit out of him instead.

As much as I dislike Whedon, the show is not bad (though Season 4 and 6 are very very weak seasons, and 7 fixes them).

Though Buffy was a small woman, the show multiple times shows that she is superpowered with enhanced strength (she sometimes accidentally breaks stuff), durability, and healing. So she is not just a standard issue 80lb woman whooping up on 200lb men ala Black Widow.

It is also filled with lot of 90s/early 00's pop culture references, so it is a trip down memory lane.

Its alright if you had seen it at that time when it wasn't feminist/woke nonsense all around you. Mind you, I couldn't stand it even then because it was way too hard for me to believe "am slayer so magic martial arts that can beat all vampires - teehee".

I can't even contemplate watching it today after all the Mary Sue Media. Not especially without the lens of nostalgia to soften it.

Try it out and maybe you will like it, but for an online influencer to peddle this today, is odd. Or oddly appropriate depending on your view of the world I guess.

She's the literal first example of the "tiny women tossing around grown men" trope.

To be fair, I don't object to this if the tiny woman canonically has super powers.

I object to it when they have it happen in something that's supposed to be grounded in reality.

The Calisto Protocol has a 105lb tiny Asian woman throw around a 200lb muscular man.

It's ridiculous.

There is also a scene when she catches the 200lb man's arm to save him from a fall and hold-on to him for a while.

... Instead of a physics-compatible scenario where they both instantly drop down (if she somehow summons the grip strenght to hold onto him at the start, which isn't believable either ).

The thing about Buffy is she has the powers of the slayer. Now are those ever defined enough to know exactly what they are, no. But we do see she has super strength and seems to take more punishment. Also Buffy is quite disliked after becoming the slayer. She goes from bubbly likable teenager to vampire hunter. And she trains a lot, even in the movie she trained most of the time. And she and other slayers lost a lot. Buffy wasn't a Mary Sue.

The Slayer has supernatural powers to be able to fight vampires. And there is an episode with Buffy training Dawn and Buffy says the most important thing to remember in fighting vampires is they have the power. So even the ultimate manifestation of vampire killers knows she is behind the eight ball.

Not really, though. Alitta Battle Angel was acclaimed by male audiences and so were some of the Underworld movies. Plus stuff like manga and animation tend to have female protagonists that are good. What male audiences don't want(or shouldn't) is anti-white and anti-male insufferable feminazi dyke looking wh*res playing female heroes, which is what Satan, I mean, Disney does with their movies.

As a life long comic books reader and collector I know that for a lot of female super heroes the majority of the readers are male. Makes sense when you look at the male/female ratio of comic book readers. Of course there are women who read comics and there are comics made for a female audience. But I’m tired of these statements because they have a problem with a majority make hobby. I remember reading an essay about why super heroes appeal to boys/men more than women.

It’s been noted before but I didn’t hear any grumbling about female heroes until marvel chose to hire feminists who hated the audience and pushed comics like America Chavez that bombed. Or crapping on your actual fans to court this mythical female audience that so many companies think are out there. Granted if you can expand your audience that’s great but don’t do it at the expense of actual fans

Good post, but you've only just grazed that the fundamental reason these shows don't succeed is because women don't want to watch them.

It's not difficult to get men to watch women in shows. You simply make the character female, somewhat attractive, and have a slightly feminine attitude, and men will jump all over themselves to watch.

https://c4.wallpaperflare.com/wallpaper/707/688/37/stargate-stargate-sg-1-amanda-tapping-samantha-carter-wallpaper-preview.jpg

I chose this picture because the one on the left has an aburdly sexual outfit - but the one on the right is the main character that guys watched week after week after week - despite wearing what are basically men's casual military clothes. Put a woman who's somewhat attractive, a little feminine, and men will watch.

It's the female audience that you have an issue with. Women aren't interested in watching other women in fight/combat/action roles.

And if you try to push the show mostly to men, then feminists show up and absolutely destroy your female characters. If she's sexy they attack that. If she talks a lot they'll attack anything her character says they don't agree with which is basically everything. If she doesn't talk they'll complain about that as well.

And importantly - if the female superhero engages in the same violence that the male superheros do - they'll have an absolute fit. This is why it's impossible to write a female superhero that men will watch even if she is attractive.

Imagine the fit feminists would have if in this scene loki was a woman.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31ZjnrHR8EA&t=41s

Take the elevator fight scene in captain america "So 15 men attack and try to dogpile on our female hero?".

The problem is always that the moment you add women to a movie, you're opening yourself up to every single thing the female character does being critisized and bemoaned, and 50%-90% of the things a male character would do being off limits even to reasonable people.

The only reason why buffy the vampire slayer exists is because feminist were not around to fuck that up.
And they still went after joss later so look how that goes for films that include women in them.

Such a disappointingly surface take. There are actual nuanced and quite frankly valid reasons why people don't like that.

Let's explore just one of them in this rant. Here we go.

In the past, literally no one cared. Not the audience that propped you up in the 90s, not the everything has to be female or POC or it's horrible and we don't like it crowd.

Fucking no one cared.

Now that it all has to be that way because of some vocal chucklefucks who don't understand what they're asking for, and their enablers, we all know now to avoid it because it's going to be a poorly written writer self insert take on what they think a tiny select group of the definitely not part of the audience wants, and not what everyone actually wants. The characters are capable of so much more, with decent writers who care about the material. We know this to be true. We've seen good movies, and read books/comics with great female leads who were more than one dimensional mary sue joy toys for the writers.

It's now a warning sign that you've taken a character, skinned it and put something else inside it, and are pretending everything is fine. Everything is not fine. We've seen through this dozens of times already, and it continues to happen because for some reason, people are listening to you, instead of the audience that actually cares about the characters that are on screen.

And you can tell they know, and that they don't care because their arguments do not hold water. Every time it comes up it almost always goes back to this old dodge. "Women were here from the start, even if it was a boys club hostile to women in every single way, but we're here now and it's our thing now boys."

You contradict your own argument with every single word. You were either here from the start and you enjoyed the same things we did, or you're new and you hate everything you saw from the past and want it changed, meaning you don't care and want it destroyed.

And people are fucking tired of it. We see it. We know to avoid it. It's not a female lead problem, it's an entitlement issue. Some think they can lay claim to an intangible thing like a part of a fandom and just ... claim it and kick out the established audience who enjoyed it for what it was. You can't claim something you hate, and fuck it rotten and claim it's the same thing as before when you know deep in your cold dead hearts that you're masquerading just so that you can ruin something that someone else enjoys.

Am I wrong? Let's look at how they turned on a dime over their precious beloved Harry Potter franchise. If that's not collective group think over a 25 year spanning fandom that is only just recently realizing that the creator is not in complete lock step with the good thought patrol and has stepped out of line and must be destroyed always. It had nothing to do with the characters or the lore of the series, it was a comment about a group of people outside the fiction, but inside that group's little narrative fiction in reality that you just can't say.

And that, ladies and gentlemen is why you do not capitulate. They'll like you until they hate you, and they'll never let you forget it, and they'll hate you for the rest of time ... until something else grabs their 15 minute attention spans.

Agreed. I was a huge comic fan.

I have many many issues dating back to the mid 70s. I enjoyed comics until they got ahold of them and felt the need to destroy everything they touch.

But they can't ruin what it was, just what they're distorting it to be.

They'll eventually be given the boot, and someone with some level of talent will pick up the pieces and rebuild the ashes. We're already seeing parts of that with the independent scene, as well as a single manga trouncing all of western comic sales, selling out in record time with their fun and imaginative creations, while Marvel and DC have to force comic book stores to close because no one is buying those anymore.

audiences only want male superheroes

No Sarah, it's that the writers' room is now full of weirdo political apparatchiks who are now incapable of writing a female character anyone wants to see.

Buffy was a massive success because Joss Whedon could, back then, freely admit that he wanted to see a nubile 16 year old piece of ass beating up vampires who all want to fuck her before they eat her.

Buffy can't be made again today because that open, honest, simple, straight-to-the-point hook is now a no-go with fat, blue-haired commies who cant stand looking at a better looking girl than themselves. They would mandate that Buffy be recast some as some unfuckable black chick with a weird shaped head and no ass or tits. Everyone knows that that would be a complete fucking bomb, and that's why we haven't seen a buffy remake.

Now go back to baking cakes rather than speaking about things you haven't thought about in 20 years.

The undeniable fact is that the audience for these movies is mostly male. And they're not going to pay money to sit and watch a homely woman lecture them about how bad they are just because she's wearing a cape.

They need to fix their "backwards way of thinking" about what's classified as entertainment.

Yeah but I think you're close but not quite there.

The average women does not want to watch women in superhero roles.

Women makes up 49% to 51% of the population based on where you are, a purely female audience will absolutely do great at the box office. Women don't want to watch it.

Feminism can convince women to say they want to watch it...can convince them to watch it once or twice...but that's where their influence over women ends, women simply don't like watching women in a superhero roles.
