The fact that people can plot to permanently enslave a man and destroy his life, without fearing violent retaliation just goes to show that we've become far too domesticated.
Traditionally you shouldnt want to break someone and leave them with nothing, because when a person has nothing to lose their only remaining avenue is revenge. Reconciliation isnt supposed to be good for the victor, its supposed to make life decent enough for the loser that he doesnt dump corpses in the well and burn the whole village down. People wouldnt give advice like the post above if they knew the story ended in a wife stabbed to death in her sleep.
But thats no longer a concern in the modern day. Men seek revenge so rarely that most people dont fear it at all. This restraint is dressed up as maturity, but really it is cuckoldry and cowardice. IMO this needs to change. There is nothing mature about allowing evil people to abuse you.
Most people arent egalitarian philanthropists. Most people act a bit sociopathic. There are exceptions, but as a whole people are self serving. They need some kind of implied consequence for bad behavior or their behavior will decay. People were not designed/evolved to be good people in a state of absolute, consequence free privilege. Its the reason why rich people are so often shitheads and why ancient religions developed concepts like hell.
It's honestly staggering that society has domesticated people so effectively that men would rather kill themselves than their enemies. It goes against our core instincts. If mankind lives through this weird age I expect people are going to write entire books attempting to explain the social mechanisms that allowed everything to get this twisted.
This phenomenon has bothered me for a long time, but I can't really express that without basically saying "people should commit more murder". It's not a great look.
What is war? Organized homicide.
