Well he could resign immediately and suddenly so the Society is left holding the bag on whatever he was doing with them, and consider rejoining if they rescind the policy.
Instead he said he'd stick around for a couple more months or more as long as they tweak the wording a little bit so it says "SHALL" instead of "MUST" or whatever gives him enough leeway to spin staying in.
