It's a meme, but like most memes, it's basically fucking true.
I would never have gotten switched on to politics if they hadn't started fucking with my videogames. And I know that statement is true for hundreds of thousands of people.
“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.
"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
What's going on with people that they hear marxist propaganda and they willingly accept it from their college professors/high school teachers?
Because the basic assumption in school at any level is that the teachers know more than the students do, so students put a lot of faith in the good intentions of their teachers and also assume they have students' best interests in mind and would not willingly pass along lies or bad information or impose their peculiar beliefs and kinks on them.
(Looking back on that last paragraph I am struck by how naieve it sounds.)
It's all a colossal lie since most teachers/professors have become political activists first and teachers second. The teachers who do not put politics first are becoming rare and will eventually get squeezed out of teaching entirely. A look at the political orientation of American university faculty will give you a good idea of why social justice indoctrination has become the main, if not the only purpose of higher ed.
This is all the fault of teachers colleges adopting "liberation pedagogy" from Paolo Friere, the hottest theorist in education for the last 20 + years. Get a load of what James Lindsay says about Friere: https://archive.ph/SgbZr
It's all Pavlov. The sjws see poc disabled trans protagonist and instantly clap, to the point where the writers don't even write plots anymore, just a series of dopamine hits that cater to their regressive fantasies.
Critical Drinker made a good essay on this in his she-hulk review.
I just wanted to play videogames, now I'm a soldier in the culture war.
Don't despair, ready yourself.

i was on their side until they decided i wasn't
The NPC meme is true and the reason that the left loathes that meme is that deep down, they know its true too.
