Yes, they did (re: golfing or other things during even slightly trying times) as well as complaints as to how many times a president visited Camp David. It's just doubled down when the president is unpopular with the press.

And I bet every president has gone golfing or whatever precisely to get away from all the listening devices that likely have been in the white house etc since forever. WH and Congressional buildings probably got more bugs than a flophouse.
