Lithium fires are solid metal fires, there really isn't a way to put them out. You can remove the heat, but that is really hard to do in field conditions. The Navy teaches about flammable metal fires as part of damage control, and the usual recommendation is to jettison overboard.
This sort of thing is why frantic research is underway to find alternative alloys to use with lithium that are not so dangerous in a thermal runaway situation.
