We want to see ourselves represented in games

Yes, and since the majority of players are still white males, maybe you should take this into account.

38
cccpneveragain 38 points ago +38 / -0

I almost wish one of these CoD type games would make them see themselves in the game. Literally. Fat, slow, out of breath for walking a little bit.

23
SR388-SAX 23 points ago +23 / -0

Except this isn't even true. I never cared at all about seeing myself "represented" in a game I was playing.

It's a case of confession through projection. They are racist sexists and just assume everyone else is.

Of course, now I actively avoid any game that prominently features a female or non-white protagonist, but it's not because I'm not "represented," it's because it's a constant reminder of all of the people who have told me that they hate me.

5
Shill4Hire 5 points ago +5 / -0

Yup. My favorite games as a kid features the following main characters:

A large anthropomorphic mouse. A velociraptor. A bunch of robots.

I am not rodent, dinosaur, or machine. "Representation" is BS, gamers don't care.

But I guess they're not catering to Gamers, Gamers Are Dead after all (on which note, an undead, also one of my childhood games), they're catering to horrible imagination-less mindless morons.

20
current_horror 20 points ago +20 / -0

They want to see themselves represented in your games. They aren’t gonna buy any of it, and they don’t give a shit about your representation.

15
Smith1980 15 points ago +15 / -0

I’ve tried to explain this to people and they get upset. Just like these fake gamer girls (women who actually like games don’t whine endlessly about sexism in games) get upset if you say that males are the majority of gamers

4
ThoughtsAndOpinions 4 points ago +4 / -0

B-but we need more black fat trans disabled poor "people" in gaming!!!!

29
ernsithe 29 points ago +29 / -0

The idea of a “tool” to make characters more diverse and inclusive may seem a little hard to wrap your head around. In practice, it has to be more than just, say, a pop-up reminder that between 2017 and 2021 nearly 80% of the highest selling games in the world featured white, male protagonists (according to a study conducted by Diamond Lobby)

Of course. Such a pop-up would just serve to remind you that you're deliberately sabotaging your revenue.

16
Ahaus667 16 points ago +16 / -0

I believe that is called proof that any gaming company that does force diversity is failing fiduciary responsibility.

12
Erithal 12 points ago +12 / -0

ESG and woke funding beg to differ.

Woke may lose money, but as long as bailouts continue, broke will never follow.

6
vicious_snek5 6 points ago +6 / -0

This right here is key

Normally focusing on that woke crap would be breaking your duties

But now they can all point to ESG and the literature around it and get away with it.

ESG isn't just something forcing companies to act a certain way, its a reason and excuse for ideologues running companies into the ground to act that way. Its a two way street.

3
Erithal 3 points ago +3 / -0

Yep. Look at the way Blackrock launders Fed funds into subversion of the housing market-- that's the ESG model moving forwards. Woke is going 'too big to fail.'

3
TakenusernameA 3 points ago +3 / -0

Fortunately Woke is also losing popularity so their attacks on the bread and circuses will begin waking the complacent.

1
toxicbiofacts 1 point ago +1 / -0

broke will never follow

You can only manipulate the market for so long. At some point, hyperinflation kicks in and everybody is broke. lol

13
Smith1980 13 points ago +13 / -0

But in a majority white country in a hobby that skews male 80% shouldn’t be surprising

10
weezkitty 10 points ago +10 / -0

The people pushing this shit don't even play the games. Video games aren't reality. They're role playing. Plenty of men play games with female protagonists so why the fuck is it a problem for women or non-white people to play a character with a different gender/race from themselves?

4
ThoughtsAndOpinions 4 points ago +4 / -0

Because they think the world revolves around them. Everything must cater to them, even if they're not actually interested in it. Like you say, the people pushing this shit don't even play the games - they just screech endlessly about it, when it makes zero difference to them.

2
Smith1980 2 points ago +2 / -0

What I’ve been saying for a while. I knew plenty of guys who played Tomb Raider and enjoyed it

20
cartoonericroberts 20 points ago +20 / -0

The fuck. How does one person have more "ethnicity" than another. I mean I know the "answer" but these fuckfaces are so fucking retarded their ability score is 4.

7
weezkitty 7 points ago +7 / -0

The modern left is far more dehumanizing than anything the right does.

10
current_horror 10 points ago +10 / -0

Not even the most extreme white supremacist thinks that black and brown people have no right to exist anywhere at all, but the inverse - that white people do not deserve continued existence as a racial/ethnic cohort - is nearly a foundational belief among modern leftists.

18
cccpneveragain 18 points ago +18 / -0

The pic at the top is the new "diverse" and it's so un-diverse it might as well be putting a white dude in every game. They must all have a pink headed butch ambiguous lesbian/tranny and a black dude modeled off Bob Marley. I'm not sure what the dwarf is for, pedo or something I guess.

11
TriangleGang 11 points ago +11 / -0

Well, the dwarf is white, which is unintentionally hilarious when you look at their radar chart on the left. The other two have the minimum value for "ability" and he is near the top.

I can't imagine anyone picking a character with high scores in "gender identity" or "ethnicity" in place of actual ability.

12
cartoonericroberts 12 points ago +12 / -0

"ability" means disability in true Orwellian style. He is missing an arm.

2
Adamrises 2 points ago +2 / -0

Its even funnier because Torb would just be labelled another straight while male by the woke pushers, but their own tool makes him far more diverse then either of the classically "diverse" stereotypes.

Almost like gender or race aren't nearly as all encompassing as they treat it.

8
FrozeInFear 8 points ago +8 / -0

Looking at the graph on the left seems to indicate diversity scores for the characters on the right.
In this case, the dwarf seems to have gotten points in body type (literally dwarfism), ability (replaced arm at least), and age ("old").

7
folx 7 points ago +7 / -0

It's the mechanical arm, so it's technically disability representation... Except bionical limbs and dwarves have been around in gaming for a long time.

3
Shill4Hire 3 points ago +3 / -0

I played Phantasy Star 3 back in the day. Both second and third character you get? Artificial arms, legs, torsos, and heads... Since they're androids. They must get SUPER-disability bonuses.

5
current_horror 5 points ago +6 / -1

My theory is that because no woke protagonist has succeeded in breaking through to mainstream appeal, all of the woke developers see it as a gap in the market that they can fill. So they continually produce the same woke content - to the point where virtually every new IP features the same cookie-cutter list characters - because they think the last ten attempts just didn’t nail it hard enough. It’s like “real communism has never been tried”, only in character design form.

2
Shill4Hire 2 points ago +2 / -0

Your optimism is noted, but the simplest solution is usually the best one, which in this case means assuming malice.

14
acp_k2win 14 points ago +14 / -0

Algorithmic retardation

I guess artificial stupidity is one of the stepping stones to artificial intelligence so progress?

9
current_horror 9 points ago +9 / -0

“Muh algorithm” is the new plausible deniability for all leftist idiocy.

10
ernsithe 10 points ago +10 / -0

Thinking about this a bit more, I kind of want to see Hammond's chart.

How many diversity points is Literal Hamster worth for Body Type?

14
Daucus9 [S] 14 points ago +14 / -0

I want to see Blizzard fill out Winston's diversity chart without breaking into a sweat.

3
TakenusernameA 3 points ago +3 / -0

What about Bastion, who may or may not be a demon from hell disguised as a robot?

1
ernsithe 1 point ago +1 / -0

Depends on if having three different configurations makes him super trans.

2
altmehere 2 points ago +2 / -0

How many diversity points is Literal Hamster worth for Body Type?

He's chubby so because of "body positivity" I'm guessing he'd earn quite a few "diversity" points there, skyrocketing obesity and overweight rates be damned.

10
current_horror 10 points ago +10 / -0

So is being white literally a zero on the ethnicity scale?

9
ThoughtsAndOpinions 9 points ago +9 / -0

The most common response? “More diversity in content.”

This doesn't even necessarily mean diversity in characters - I'd interpret this more closely to a desire for different types of gameplay, new features, etc; not a desire for more nog/fag playable characters

2
TakenusernameA 2 points ago +2 / -0

Overwatch actually does need more diversity of content because 99% of the time its either screwing around in custom or playing PvP.

9
BandageBandolier 9 points ago +9 / -0

We want to see ourselves represented in games, we want the barriers to access lowered, and we want games to be a welcoming environment for all. Just look at the 2019 International Game Developers Association (IGDA) “Developer Satisfaction Survey,” which asked developers what they considered to be the most important factor in the growth of the gaming industry. The most common response? “More diversity in content.” It’s not even a question anymore.

Y'know what is a pressing question though? Who the fuck taught you how to read if that's the only interpretation of the phrase "more diverse content" you can think of?

4
altmehere 4 points ago +4 / -0

There are so many assumptions they've made here that drawing any conclusions is ridiculous.

As you point out, that's incredibly open to interpretation. But even "growth" is ambiguous. Does it mean a bigger market? More sales in general? It could even be taken to mean such bullshit as "moral growth" or as a synonym for a nebulous idea of "maturity" as we've seen some people try to push on games.

We're also assuming that the IGDA's sample is representative of the industry (and not, say, indie devs). And that developers have perfect knowledge of what players want.

And for fuck's sake, if "it’s not even a question anymore" it wouldn't be a question on the survey, would it?

9
SR388-SAX 9 points ago +9 / -0

The included Call of Duty screenshot showcasing its "diversity" is one of the stupidest looking things I've ever seen.

There's a reason that I haven't played a AAA release pretty much since they started being referred to as AAA releases. My only exceptions are a few main-series Nintendo games.

12
TriangleGang 12 points ago +12 / -0

And wholly unnecessary as WWII was a "World War". It's literally part of the name.

Rather than a fictional black British para, they could have a black character that represented an actual combatant.

3/8 of them being women- unexcusably inaccurate.

0
SupremeReader 0 points ago +1 / -1

If they really cared, they could include for example such an important NPC:

https://rarehistoricalphotos.com/fuzzy-wuzzy-angel-1942/ (the article goes beyond the first paragraph, an early ad might be misleading)

Anyway, compare https://youtube.com/watch?v=WHHAcqZMlqA to https://youtube.com/watch?v=ljLBEbAKkvE

2
What_password 2 points ago +2 / -0

Triple AAA release quality has been especially abysmal for the last couple of years. I think I've picked up 2 or 3 games that are considered AAA in the last 2 years. You really aren't missing out. At least AA and indie games are pretty good these days.

9
MetalGearMk4 9 points ago +9 / -0

Jesus Christ who gives a fuck about representation just give me a well written character be it gay or a darkie I don't care about relating to it.

And they used this gay ass tool on the new cod and look how that turned out that shit bombed.

7
Daucus9 [S] 7 points ago +7 / -0

I think the best part of this is that (depending on when those images were taken) ....Blizzard did not internally change the name of McCree.

6
LaptopWillEatThisAcc 6 points ago +6 / -0

When I clicked on the link just now, the post didn't have any images in it; the header's just the Acti-Blizz logo, and none of the in-line images and their captions existed. Luckily, someone had archived the article before these changes were made. I hope this serves as a good reminder to ALWAYS ARCHIVE THAT SHIT.

Since the image you're referencing was placed after a paragraph which opens by saying that the tool started being developed in 2016, and considering that the types who'd most care about 'diversity' would also definitely be the types who'd screech loudest about the company's sexual allegations, I'm almost certain that the image is old and they changed McCree's name in this tool. However, since this looks to be just a shitty web-based tool, it's possible that his original name shows up elsewhere internally in more important places, like in his model or texture filenames.

2
Daucus9 [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

Thanks for this. I had been in the process of archiving the page but it was very slow. I assumed I could edit the link later but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Even though it's possible the screenshots of McCree could predate his name change, it is still funny that after all their posturing about getting rid of their sex pests and renaming McCree to show how mindful they are....they went and chose to post a screenshot featuring McCree anyway.

2
LaptopWillEatThisAcc 2 points ago +2 / -0

No worries. Archiving may break or be very slow sometimes, but times like these help show why it's necessary. Since this is a Reddit-like site, link and image posts cannot be edited, but text posts and comments can.

You're right, I hadn't thought of the implications of that screenshot passing all the checks and being posted. One would think that the company's official blog would have a lot of oversight, but since this happened, I wonder if it was just run by a single intern who either didn't realise the implications of using that shot or thought that its historical value (if it really is older) was more valuable than staying 'politically correct'. However, the fact that they nuked every single image together with editing in that new four-paragraph spiel at the top makes me think that the McCree thing was just the cherry on top of the sundae. There were probably some very interesting conversations going on in their PR department about this situation.

nuggetpatrol 7 points ago +7 / -0

Literally stripping the characters of personality, in game abilities, and playstyle right down to what superficial details they have. "To avoiding tokenism, stereotypes and exclusion... by doing tokenism, stereotypes, and exclusion!" Genius move Blizzard.

3
GimmeFuelGimmeFire 3 points ago +3 / -0

It's Overwatch, the characters never had personality to begin with.

6
Smith1980 6 points ago +6 / -0

I’m dumber after reading this article. I wish I could fire everyone pushing this garbage in games. Anyone who talks about unconscious bias is someone that shouldn’t be in power.

5
RoccoRatchet 5 points ago +5 / -0

Subscriptions to World of Warcraft are at possibly the lowest they've ever been, neither Cold War nor Vanguard did well in terms of sales, and the Overwatch playerbase has dwindled dramatically. Their focus on "diversity" and "inclusion" put them in this position. Doubling down is not going to get them out of it.

3
Adamrises 3 points ago +3 / -0

Overwatch 2 beta basically torpedoed interest in the game, and Diablo Immortal still has everyone's resentment after its reveal. They've also run out of games to remaster, and after Wrath nobody wants more Classic content.

So even their future products are all DOA.

2
Shill4Hire 2 points ago +2 / -0

Final Fantasy 1 has been remastered 5 or so times. Don't assume just because everything's been remastered, that such is the end of it.

1
Daucus9 [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

FF1 has been remastered but Square has also put out a considerable number of other games to offset the repetition so the two are not comparable.

1
Adamrises 1 point ago +1 / -0

Generally you need X amount of time or a new console to do it for. Considering their genres they are very limited to just PC, they really can't do much as all of them have been in the last few years already.

All that's really left is Warcraft 1 and 2, which they haven't yet touched for some reason and Warcraft 1 is basically a nothing game anyway.

1
Knife-TotingRat 1 point ago +1 / -0

Well, they could always bloody well remaster the original Diablo, and give it a stash.

1
Adamrises 1 point ago +1 / -0

Diablo 1 probably wouldn't be worth the money for them, because of how lacking it is in replayability compared to 2. They'd have to create a lot more content to justify it, because people expect more game for their money than they did back then.

SupremeReader 0 points ago +1 / -1

I just imagined nu-ActivBliz Dead or Alive games.

neither Cold War nor Vanguard did well in terms of sales

How is Warzone doing though?

And it doesn't matter, Microsoft bought the whole dumpster fire for the Call of Duty license.

0
SupremeReader 0 points ago +1 / -1

Is it really true about Cold War?

1
RoccoRatchet 1 point ago +1 / -0

Not to the extent it was with Vanguard, but yes. Activision touted a large number of pre-orders and initial sales, which was true, but they don't talk about the refunds issued because the game was a technical mess.

Also Activision-Blizzard released this as YET ANOTHER CONVENIENTLY TIMED COINCIDENCE because reports came out that they had sent anti-union emails during union election by its game testers. Activision-Blizzard has also threatened promotion and employee benefits if people try to unionize.

This happens over and over: something sleezy happens with Activision-Blizzard and they'll spit out an update declaring a character is gay or do some puff piece about how they care so much about diversity in order to bury the articles that make them look bad. This isn't a random declaration of how committed they are to diversity, they did this because the day before some articles were published about their illegal union-busting activities.
