In retrospect we should have seen it coming when they started with "you're not allowed to hate me".

Someone shows up to your party and says "you're not allowed to hate me" there is 0% chance that they won't start engaging in behavior before the end of the that makes everyone there hate them. They know what they're going to do later and they're prepping for it.
