I don’t think any of it ever really went away, honestly…
There’s always been pockets of this nasty, autocratic bullshit (generally Latin America, Africa and the Middle East) - it’s just that in places like Australia it sort of just bubbled under the surface, or hid itself under a cloak/veil of “wholeness”, exactly as this current regime does…
See, this is the thing: Novak literally grew up in a war zone. In his childhood, he saw unspeakable shit, which almost no Australians born in this country (excluding those who grew up in remote Aboriginal communities, arguably), and certainly no politician, would ever have seen, or will ever see. That is the problem.
I’ve also come to the realization, this last week, that Australia just isn’t a “real”, functioning country, in the sense that, say, the US, or fucking Mexico, is…
We never fought for our independence. We never really drafted a proper, working constitution based on “protecting liberty”, or “the inalienable rights of the people”, or anything like that. No “amendments” to fall back upon. Uniquely, as a Western country, no “bill of rights”. No true “human rights charter”. And now we know, clearly, that we do not even have a truly independent court system…
The separation between the judiciary, the legislature and the executive? That fundamental tenet of parliamentary democracy? It is now apparent that does not hold. Here, in New Zealand, in Germany OR in France. It was all an illusion. Even in this supposed “stable” democracy.
We’re not a “free country”. We never were. We just lied to ourselves, and bullshitted to the rest of the world, claiming it.
We were never truly “invaded”. We never truly fought a hot war on home soil. Now we know exactly what sort of complacency, and contempt for the rule of law, that can breed…
Fuck Australia. Fuck this country. This should be a red line, a black day in the history of this bullshit facade of a “nation”.
I do not think history will look kindly upon today’s events, or the legal and human ramifications of the rhetoric which this court just signed off on.
All correct, the closest thing we have to ever having to defend our soil is some air raids in WW2, and a bunch of miners having a shootout with the Police in the goldfields, also something similar with rum tax.
Oh... phew... for a moment I thought the allies had destroyed and beaten Nazism and their allies in 1945.

Neither of them went anywhere.
