Also, if we're going for recommendations of similar singers who are actually still alive, write their own stuff, and happen to be based giga-chads: Van Morrison.
Bob Dylan for adults/spiritualists.
Go for "Days Like This", "Saint Dominic's Preview", "Dweller on the Threshhold", "Crazy Love", "Into the Mystic", "Jackie Wilson Said", and like 20 other songs that are worth a listen, IMHO.
And very anti- covid bullshit, too, so extra worthy of our support, lol!
I think "interpreting a song", as here, is an underrated skill. Same with Eva Cassidy. It's pretty much a whole new song, at that point, especially done live!
But yeah, awesome singer, great backing singers (10 ft From Stardom, anyone?), and awesome band = pretty dope, I reckon!
Pretty sure Joe was probably drunk or stoned on heroin when they recorded this, so that makes it extra impressive, lol.
Original is by The Box Tops (American), but this version, by the gravelly Englishman, is definitely better, lol.
This is what humanity can produce when it doesn't worry about 'cultural appropriation", looking bad, "offending" someone or any of that bull...
If you want a "cleaner" version (sacrilege!), there's several other live Cocker recordings out there, which fit that bill, but I would go for the Eva Cassidy version, which is where I first heard this song. Very similar to Cocker, but also awesome, and equally great in its own way. Eva is probably the most underrated singer ever, so give her a shot!
