I've studied zoology. You are literally taught to ignore your ethical misgivings, about live animal experimentation, and treat your experimental animals as "disposable"...
I'm not sure that people who haven't been exposed to that environment quite get it...
And it's even worse for Med students, for whom... Live vertebrate experimentation is EVEN MORE common...
The university "environment", at least in STEM, teaches you that the ends ALWAYS justify the means, and "animals are suffering and dying in factory farms anyway, so WHO CARES what we do to a few domesticated specimens?"
It's really, really bad. From experience.
You either burn out, or you become an emotionless drone, who doesn't even think about the consequences of what you are doing for the poor sentient beings you are experimenting on... :-(
Yes, like having beagles faces eaten by sand flies. Or selling chimera virus bats on the black market in China. You know, wholesome science.
Part of me thinks that these sickos want to do these types of research just to satisfy their perverted desires, no real soyence happening.
The type of person who gets into these positions absolutely wants to torture innocent creatures and then brag about it
I would go further than this...
