As some one who works with the mentally ill, honestly, saying that gender dysphoria is a mental illness is giving it too much credit. To be accurate, it is a (unhealthy) coping mechanism to deal with the symptoms of actual mental disorders. Most commonly ptsd (usually related to sexual abuse at a young age) and depression. Really anything that would cause disassociation.
It's not a coincidence that people with gender dysphoria also have at least one mental disorder. Also, saying that some one has a mental disorder is not any more cruel than saying that someone has a broken leg. Don't let the left try to shame you for noticing that some one has a medical condition.
I see that as partly an issue of "I'm having an identity crisis"; but that's not the real problem.
When I say "gender dysphoria" I'm talking about the person who hate's their own body so much, an ambulance had to be called because the person tried cutting of their own dick with a set of scissors and succeeded. That person needs real help.
