But hey, I remember some seriously big rats where I was from, too. The city helped take care of that by welcoming skunks migrating into town, and simply gave them all rabies vaxxes. (The other advantage of skunks is that if you're illegally growing weed, no one will think any further if they see a skunk in your yard if there's a funny smell.)
My own neighbourhood was plagued with immigrant animal-haters, but once they died off, and new people with cats and dogs moved in, that helped, too. (I'm talking about events that happened between the 1970s and the 1990s).
