(The other advantage of skunks is that if you're illegally growing weed, no one will think any further if they see a skunk in your yard if there's a funny smell.)
My own neighbourhood was plagued with immigrant animal-haters, but once they died off, and new people with cats and dogs moved in, that helped, too. (I'm talking about events that happened between the 1970s and the 1990s).
